Traditionally, significantly within the 18th and nineteenth centuries, the day after Christmas, December twenty sixth, was a day to acknowledge servants and tradesmen with presents, typically with cash or presents, and – particularly for family servants – a present of boxed leftovers and a time off to go to their households. The day’s celebration modified over many years from charitable giving to a financial institution vacation, then ultimately to a day of watching soccer . . . in the present day it’s typically seen as a buying day, maybe to make use of a present certificates or return a present for refund or change.
