A talented musician and coder, the French American pianist Dan Tepfer builds pc programmes that work together with his improvised compositions in manners each musical and visible. In this efficiency of ‘TriadSculpture’ from his multimedia undertaking Natural Machines (2018), which explores ‘the intersection, in music, between natural and mechanical processes’, Tepfer improvises on piano as visible representations of the chords he performs with his left hand are generated on display screen. The result’s each a beautiful audiovisual expertise and a small, curious glimpse into the customarily hidden patterns and ratios that make music attainable.
